Poker Glossary and Laws
The Bug
The Bug is a joker without full privileges. It counts as an additional ace and may also be used to make up any straight or flush. Thus the Bug and a 6, 7, 8, 9 constitute a straight. But the Bug, three sixes and a ten merely count as three sixes since the Bug is not strictly a wild card. In high uk poker when the joker or the Bug is used there is considerable local variation in ranking hands. In many places five of a kind beats four of a kind but loses to a straight flush. In others five of a kind merely counts as four of a kind and four aces beat five kings, etc. Other places do not allow a double ace flush and rule in the case of flushes that the joker can not be counted as one of the cards in the holder's hand.
It is best not to break ties such as between joker, nine, eight, seven, six and ten, nine, eight, seven, six, but in some places the natural hand winner and in others the hand with the joker.
The Stripped Deck
The lower cards may be taken out of the deck if desired. In this instance the ace still counts as a one at the bottom of a straight. Thus, if the deuces and treys are out of the deck, a 7, 6, 5, 4, A, is a straight.
Wild Cards
Any card or cards may be counted as wild, in which case they have the same rights as jokers. If all of one rank-say the deuces-are wild, it is the same as playing with the stripped deck and four additional jokers.
Preliminaries to the Game. Any number of players from two up may play, although it is inadvisable to have more than eight, and seven constitutes the best game.
The Banker
The banker takes charge of and distributes the chips. However, unless otherwise provided, in the event of a bookkeeping error all players share an equal responsibility for the bank. |
