Poker Glossary and Laws

The Bug

Poker UK

The Bug is a joker without full privileges. It counts as an additional ace and may also be used to make up any straight or flush. Thus the Bug and a 6, 7, 8, 9 constitute a straight. But the Bug, three sixes and a ten merely count as three sixes since the Bug is not strictly a wild card. In high uk poker when the joker or the Bug is used there is considerable local variation in ranking hands. In many places five of a kind beats four of a kind but loses to a straight flush. In others five of a kind merely counts as four of a kind and four aces beat five kings, etc. Other places do not allow a double ace flush and rule in the case of flushes that the joker can not be counted as one of the cards in the holder's hand.
It is best not to break ties such as between joker, nine, eight, seven, six and ten, nine, eight, seven, six, but in some places the natural hand winner and in others the hand with the joker.

The Stripped Deck

The lower cards may be taken out of the deck if desired. In this instance the ace still counts as a one at the bottom of a straight. Thus, if the deuces and treys are out of the deck, a 7, 6, 5, 4, A, is a straight.

Wild Cards

Any card or cards may be counted as wild, in which case they have the same rights as jokers. If all of one rank-say the deuces-are wild, it is the same as playing with the stripped deck and four additional jokers.
Preliminaries to the Game. Any number of players from two up may play, although it is inadvisable to have more than eight, and seven constitutes the best game.

The Banker

The banker takes charge of and distributes the chips. However, unless otherwise provided, in the event of a bookkeeping error all players share an equal responsibility for the bank.

Poker
Many Face Of Poker

They had both spotted a no low player situation and banged heads. Of course, had either of them spotted it earlier, he might have succeeded in bringing it off. How do you smell out the situation? It is impossible to describe. You know all the cards that were folded; you know the style of the other players; you watch and listen. Freddie is staring at Bill's cards, not Paul's; Frank appears to be counting the diamonds; Mabel is fingering her cards, ready to fold when the bet reaches her, a strong player, is studying the size of the pot and from the looks of him is considering dropping out. If you are oblivious to these tidbits, you don't have command of the table. If you observe them but your batting average on interpretation is low, you don't have command of the table.

First Deal

Any player picks up the deck and proceeds to deal the cards around, the first player who is dealt a jack becoming dealer. After that the deal passes in rotation to the left.

Conditions of the Game

Before start of play the following points should be definitely determined:
1. The value of the chips.
2. The ante.
3. The limit.
4. In the event of Table Stakes the conditions under which a player
may (a) place more chips (b) withdraw chips

Shuffle and Cut

Any player may shuffle the cards, the dealer having last right. The cards must then be offered to the player at the dealer's right for a cut. He is not obliged to cut, but if he declines to do so, any other player, including the dealer himself, may claim the right.

Misdeal

In case of a misdeal the same player deals again with the same pack. A misdeal occurs:
1. If any card is exposed in cutting or reuniting the packs.
2. If any card is found faced in the pack prior to the start of the betting.
3. If two or more cards are exposed during the deal.
4. If at any time prior to the next hand it is proven that the pack imperfect.
5. If the wrong player deals and attention is called to that fact by a player who has not looked at any of his cards.
6. If before betting has started it is discovered that the cards have been dealt improperly and it is impossible to correct the error.

Card Exposed During the Deal

In Stud Poker if a player's hole card is exposed during the deal, he takes it face up and simply receives his next card face down. In Draw poker if one of the players' cards is exposed during the deal, he must take it. In Lowball or High-Low Draw, a player must take any card in the perfect low but may not take any other card.
